The Louisiana Tech Powerlifting Team was started by Dr. Billy Jack Talton in the fall of 1974 at the request of five Louisiana Tech students.
The team has averaged 35 members a year, including both men and women since its formation. Louisiana Tech has produced numerous Collegiate All-Americans, with team members participating in AAU National meets, USAPL Senior National meets, USAPL Junior Nationals, IPF Junior Worlds, IPF Sub-Junior Worlds, and the Good Will Games.
Tech lifters have competed in several different states and foreign countries including: Australia, Czech Republic, South Africa, Russia, Slovakia, Hungary, Indonesia, India, Taiwan, Bulgaria, Canada, Poland, France, and Mexico.
Currently the team has won 31 national titles. In the spring of 2001, Dr. Billy Jack Talton retired as head coach and Professor Emeritus, but still actively serves as Team Mentor. Head coaching responsibilities have now been taken over by Josh Chovanec. Josh is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University Department of Kinesiology. Josh lifted for the Irondawgs and was a part of three Jr. World Teams. Every year the team works hard together to win the next National Championship.
